Hanna Instruments HI 8424 Waterproof Portable pH Meter, with ATC and HOLD Feature Review

Hanna Instruments HI 8424 Waterproof Portable pH Meter, with ATC and HOLD Feature Feature

  • Microprocessor-based meter for increased speed and accuracy
  • Automatic calibration with three memorized buffer solutions for ease of use
  • Automatic or manual temperature compensation depending on probe used
  • Auto-off function and Battery Error Prevention System (BEPS) to prolong battery life and prevent false readings
  • Waterproof casing for indoor and outdoor use

The Hanna Instruments HI 8424 Waterproof pH Meter w/Automatic Calibration and Temperature Compensation is a microprocessor-based pH, mV and temperature tester.

The HI 8424 features a large LCD screen for readability, and automatic or manual temperature compensation depending on probe used. Calibration is automatic using three memorized buffer values (pH 4.01, 7.01, and 10.01). The meter includes a pH electrode and temperature probe, but ORP probes must be purchased separately. The meter operates on one 9V battery which can be recharged by laying the device on the HI 710040 battery charger (purchases separately) for about 14 hours. The meter features an auto-off function after 20 minutes (which can be disabled), and the Battery Error Prevention System (BEPS) which turns the meter off if the battery is low enough to take false readings.

pH range is -2.00 to 16.00 pH (+ or – 0.01), with resolution 0.01 pH. The HI 8424 tester measures temperatures of -20.0 to 120.0 degrees C (-4.0 to 248.0 degrees F) with accuracy + or - 0.4 degrees C/+ or - 0.8 degrees F, RH max 100%. Temperature effects are automatically compensated for from -20 to 120°C (-4 to 248 degrees F), or manually calculated without the temperature probe. Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) measurements have a range of + or - 699.9mV and + or - 1999mV (accuracy + or - 0.2 mV; + or - 1 mV) with a resolution of 0.1 mV and an automatic switch to 1mV resolution when readings reach + or - 699.9mV. The device has an input impedance of 1012 Ohm.

pH testers measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance and are commonly used by researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists.

Hanna Instruments manufactures a wide variety of analytical instrumentation, including pH meters, multi-parameter meters, electrodes, chemical reagents and buffer solutions. Founded in 1978, Hanna is headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, with subsidiaries located in 32 countries. Hanna Instruments holds many firsts in the field of analytical instrumentation, including the world’s first pH electrode with a built in temperature sensor, electronic pocket-sized pH tester, and replaceable electrode pH pocket tester. To assure the quality of their products, Hanna is a vertically integrated manufacturer and does not subcontract any part of its manufacturing.
